Retail Energy Supply Association Celebrates the 20th Anniversary of its Executive Director

RESA Reflects on Milestones and Achievements Over the Past Two Decades

(Harrisburg, PA) May 17, 2021 The Retail Energy Supply Association (RESA), the nation’s leading trade association representing competitive retail energy suppliers, honors 20 years of service from its executive director, Tracy McCormick. Since 2001, McCormick has helped grow RESA into a nationally recognized organization.

RESA began as a regional association with a small group of member companies that advocated for retail electric choice in three states. Under McCormick’s leadership, RESA has grown its initiatives to champion retail choice in the existing 13 states and the District of Columbia, as well as emerging markets. The group also added natural gas issues to its advocacy.

Each market has its own policy monitoring group for electric and natural gas issues that focus on policy developments related to electricity and natural gas retail competition. These may include testifying in front of state legislatures, regulatory commissions or the Federal Energy Regulation Commission (FERC).

“Tracy has been an integral part of RESA’s success for the past 20 years,” said Gretchen Fuhr, president of RESA. “Her leadership, industry expertise and vision have been paramount in growing the organization nationally. We appreciate her dedication in helping raise awareness of the importance of retail energy choice and letting customers choose their own supplier.”

In addition to supporting issues at the state and national levels, RESA also publishes whitepaper research, national polls, monthly market savings reports, blogs, press releases and information to legislators and the media. Additionally the organization employs the influence of social media through LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook. RESA also created an annual National Energy Shopping Day to highlight to consumers the importance of shopping for your retail energy needs.

“The career path I have chosen has not been an easy one, but it has been extremely rewarding. Our industry is often the target of biases and misinformation, and we will continue to work to preserve current markets as well as grow new markets through education and advocacy,” says McCormick. “When consumers are given a choice, energy retailers must vie for their business and are in turn, motivated to innovate and drive change that would not have been realized without retail energy choice. Disruption drives innovation. Innovations we take for granted today, such as smart thermostats, smart meters, rooftop solar and electric cars, all began because of the disruption of competitive markets, while saving consumers money in the process.”

Since 2008 the 14 competitive states and jurisdictions in which RESA members operate have saved end-use customers over $301 billion through 2019 compared to the price performance metrics in the thirty-five monopoly states.

“Over the past 20 years, RESA has strengthened the industry through its persistent advocacy of retail choice at the state and federal level, as well as our members’ expertise and thought leadership,” continues McCormick. “Working at RESA during the ever-changing landscape the past two decades has been a complex and inspiring journey. I feel fortunate to have served at the helm of RESA during this time and worked with so many bright, talented and hardworking people. I am lucky to have such a fulfilling career, and I look forward to the many challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in our industry.”

Every day the RESA executive committee, staff and members work to advocate for sustainable competitive retail energy markets for residential, commercial and industrial consumers. To learn more about RESA and its initiatives, please visit https://www.resausa.org.
