National Clean Energy Week: Powering a Cleaner Future with Retail Energy

The Retail Energy Supply Association (RESA) is celebrating the 8th annual National Clean Energy Week, which recognizes policies, industries and innovations that power our lives while working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Building a more sustainable environmental future is a top priority.

This year, 37 governors and 49 municipalities issued proclamations in support of National Clean Energy Week. Many of these states and municipalities are working toward meeting aggressive zero-emission goals by supporting new energy from alternative sources such as nuclear, solar, wind, wave, hydropower, geothermal, and others.

Retail Energy’s Role in Clean Energy Adoption

Retail energy suppliers play a significant role in advancing clean energy initiatives. These efforts contribute to delivering green products and services, such as smart thermostats and smart meters to homes and businesses. And their role extends beyond simply offering consumers competitive electricity and natural gas products. Retail suppliers are at the intersection of innovation, market-driven solutions and sustainability. With growing public demand for renewable energy sources, retail suppliers have invested in clean energy initiatives, infrastructure and technologies.

Retail competition allows consumers the power to choose their energy suppliers. Today, more customers are opting for green energy plans that promote renewables. Whether it’s 100% wind energy or a combination of green energy sources, retail energy suppliers provide clean energy to consumers through voluntary renewable energy programs and renewable energy credits (RECs). These programs enable consumers to reduce their carbon footprint while supporting the growth of renewable energy markets.

Challenges and Opportunities

Despite significant advancements in green energy, the industry continues to face challenges in fully realizing the benefits of clean energy. One of the most pressing challenges is grid modernization.  As demand for renewable energy surges, driven by the growth of data centers and electric vehicles, the need for a more resilient, reliable and flexible grid becomes critical. Retail energy suppliers, regulators and legislators must continue collaborating on proposals that upgrade aging infrastructure and support the integration of renewable energy sources.

Policy uncertainty remains a challenge. With states implementing varying levels of support for renewable energy, the landscape continues to be fragmented. RESA advocates for policies that promote competition, provide consumers with energy Independence and lead to advancements in clean energy technologies and products.

While challenges remain in transitioning to a more sustainable energy future, retail energy suppliers are well-positioned and experienced partners for states and municipalities. They play a key role in educating consumers about the advantages of choosing clean energy solutions while empowering individuals with greater control over their energy use.

Looking Ahead

RESA is steadfast in its commitment to advancing clean energy through competition, consumer choice and innovation. The retail energy sector will continue to work alongside legislators, regulators and other stakeholders to accelerate the transition to a cleaner, more sustainable energy future that is accessible and affordable for all consumers.

Through collaborative efforts and continued innovation, RESA is confident that retail energy suppliers will remain at the forefront of the clean energy revolution—empowering consumers to make greener choices and driving meaningful change in the energy landscape. Together, we can power a cleaner, brighter future.
