The Retail Energy Supply Association (RESA) is a broad and diverse group of retail energy suppliers who share the common vision that competitive retail electricity and natural gas markets deliver a more efficient, customer-oriented outcome than a regulated utility structure. RESA is devoted to working with all stakeholders to promote vibrant and sustainable competitive retail energy markets for residential and industrial consumers.
Why We Operate
Competition—not regulation—is the most effective means to allocate resources efficiently. Electricity and natural gas should be provided by competitive entities rather than by price-regulated utilities.
Retail competition is essential for markets to thrive and thus allows consumers to shop for energy that is competitively priced and best suits their individual needs.
The ability to choose an electric and gas supplier should be a right that is available to all consumers, not just those who reside in restructured states or jurisdictions.
How We Operate
RESA proactively advocates for consumer choice, which is currently only available in 13 states and the District of Columbia. The organization’s members represent both large and small retail electric and natural gas providers. Established over 20 years ago, RESA is a trusted resource for regulators and legislators. The Association is actively working to open new markets in regulated states.
All RESA members operate collectively throughout the United States and may serve one or all customer segments, including residential, commercial and industrial.
Each market has a policy-monitoring group for electric and/or natural gas issues that develop regarding retail gas competition in state legislatures, regulatory commissions and administrative agencies.
RESA members meet with state public utility commissions, legislatures and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) regarding restructuring issues as well as intervene in cases before commissions.
RESA advocates for vibrant and sustainable competitive retail energy markets as a better alternative for consumers than monopoly-protected utility regulation. Read more about our RESA Principles.
